The city of Groningen wanted a painting which showcased the Groninger’s spirit, while paying homage to the city’s long history of education, trade and community. Groningen’s municipality commisioned Egbert Modderman, a prominent Groningen portrait artist known for his works in the city’s Martini church. Earlier today, his painting was unveiled and is on permanent display in the city hall’s entry way . Prior to its reveal, 9to5 spoke to Modderman about the meaning of his work; both for him and the city of Groningen.
